On February 21st, the Ukrainian Cinema Club presents the documentary Fragments of Ice at MACA, directed by Maria Stoianova. This film offers a personal and historical perspective on Ukraine’s transition from the final years of the Soviet Union to the early years of independence. The documentary is built from archival footage filmed by Stoianova’s father, a figure skater who traveled the world in the 1980s and 90s. His home videos reveal a striking contrast: the glamour of international tours versus the reality of life in the USSR. Fragments of Ice intertwines these intimate family images with broader political and social changes in Ukraine. Ultimately, the film touches on recent events, such as Russia’s 2022 invasion, where history tragically repeats itself.
